Xabitha (often written Thabita) is a partnership variant of Konkan, the rummy-style card game played across Iraq, the Levant and the Gulf. Four players in two teams draw and discard, lay runs and sets on the table, and race to be the first to empty their hand, using two full decks and two jokers.
What sets Xabitha apart is commitment. Right after the deal, every player privately decides whether to go for the Xabitha, the spectacular one-move finish of a 10-card run plus a four-suit set. Your opening must include at least one run, and when your side opens first, the opposing team has to lay more to get in. Nobody is ever knocked out of a round, and taking from the discard pile carries no penalty, so the game is all about reading your hand and your opponents.

What you need to play Xabitha
Xabitha is played with 106 cards: two standard 52-card decks plus 2 jokers. Every ordinary card appears twice, but there are only two jokers in the whole deck.
Ranks run 2 to 10, J, Q, K, A. The Ace is normally high but can also be used low in a run (A-2-3). Suits have no ranking; they only matter for building runs and sets.
Xabitha setup, the deal and the declaration
The four players form two partnerships, with partners opposite each other. From the second round on, the winner of the previous round starts.
- Shuffle all 106 cards. Deal 15 to the round starter and 14 to each other player; the rest form the face-down draw deck.
- The discard pile (the “fire” pile) starts empty. The starter already holds an extra card, so their first turn is simply a discard.
- Before any card is played, each player looks at their hand and privately answers: “Do you want Xabitha mode this round?” You have 10 seconds to decide.
- Answering yes commits you to Xabitha mode for the whole round. Answering no, or letting the timer run out, keeps you in normal mode. The choice resets every round.
The objective of Xabitha
Each round, be the first player to empty your hand by laying every card into melds and discarding your last card. The winner and their partner score 0, and the opponents take penalty points. Xabitha is low-score-wins: the partnership with the lowest total after the final round wins the match.
How a turn works in Xabitha
- Draw one card, either the top card of the draw deck or the top card of the fire pile. Taking from the fire pile is always safe in Xabitha: no penalty and no change of mode.
- Optionally act on the table: open, add cards to melds, steal a joker, or lay the Xabitha formation. Always keep at least one card to discard.
- Discard one card face up. Play passes clockwise.
- If you take the top fire card and discard that same card, the take is undone and you draw again.
- Only the top card of the fire pile is visible and can be taken.
- An illegal move is simply refused; nobody is ever eliminated from a round of Xabitha.
Melds: runs and sets
- Set: 3 or 4 cards of the same rank in different suits, such as Q♣ Q♦ Q♥ Q♠. No suit may repeat.
- Run: 3 or more consecutive cards of one suit, such as 4♠ 5♠ 6♠. Q-K-A and A-2-3 are valid; K-A-2 is not, because runs never wrap.
- A meld laid from your hand holds at most 5 cards. Longer runs are split and can grow later.
- A complete four-card set made only of real cards is removed from the table at the end of the turn and buried in the fire pile.
Going down: 51 points, a run and rising thresholds
To open in Xabitha you must lay, in one move, melds worth at least your current opening threshold (51 at the start of every round), and at least one of those melds must be a run. A sets-only opening is refused however many points it holds. For example, 8♣ 9♣ 10♣ (27) plus K♠ K♦ K♥ (30) makes 57 with a run, so it is a legal opening.
Once you are down you may lay further melds and add cards to any meld on the table whose owner has gone down.
Every player has their own opening threshold, starting at 51 each round. When a player opens, their partner’s threshold goes back to 51, while opponents whose team has not opened yet now face a higher bar that climbs with the opener’s total. A team that has already opened is not affected.
That makes a big opening a weapon: open strong while the other team is still closed, and you can lock them out for the rest of the round.
| Card | Points |
|---|---|
| 2 to 9 | Face value |
| 10, J, Q, K, A | 10 |
| Joker inside a meld | Value of the card it replaces |
| Joker left in hand at round end | 25, always |
Jokers and the joker steal
A joker can replace any card in a run or set, but at least two of the first three cards of any meld you lay must be real cards, so a 3-card meld never holds two jokers.
Once you are down, you can steal a joker from a table meld by giving it the exact card the joker stands for. A joker inside a four-card set can never be stolen. Unlike Konkan, there is no discount: a joker left in your hand at the end of a round always costs 25 points.
The Xabitha go-out
A player in Xabitha mode cannot open normally. Their way out is the Xabitha formation: after drawing to 15 cards, lay a 10-card run of one suit and a four-card set with all four suits in a single move, then discard the last card. Jokers may be used in either meld.
The Xabitha bonus is only paid when the formation is actually laid. Winning the round any other way counts as a normal win.
Xabitha scoring
- Partners’ scores are pooled into one partnership total.
- If the draw deck runs out, the fire pile (except its top card) is reshuffled into a new deck, up to twice per round. The third time, the round is cancelled and nobody scores.
- A match is 5 rounds (1 on a quick table); the lowest partnership total wins, and tied totals share the win.
| Player | Normal win | Xabitha win |
|---|---|---|
| Winner and partner | 0 | 0 |
| Opponent who never opened | 100 | 200 |
| Opponent who opened | Points of cards left in hand | 0 |
How Xabitha differs from Konkan
- Konkan mode is triggered by your moves in Konkan; in Xabitha you declare it privately before play starts, and it cannot change during the round.
- Konkan needs 51 points of any melds to open; Xabitha also requires at least one run, and thresholds rise for the team that has not opened yet.
- Taking from the fire pile can lock you into Konkan mode in Konkan; in Xabitha it is always safe.
- Konkan can eliminate players for certain illegal moves; in Xabitha illegal moves are simply refused.
- A stolen joker costs only 2 points in Konkan; in Xabitha every joker in hand costs 25.
- The Xabitha formation is always a 10-card run plus a four-card set.
Strategy tips
- Decide on Xabitha mode from your dealt hand: long same-suit stretches and pairs toward a four-suit set are the signs to say yes.
- If your team can open first, open big. Every point above 51 makes it harder for the opposing team to get in.
- Plan your opening around a run early; a hand full of sets will not get you down on its own.
- Open whenever you can against a possible Xabitha. An opened player pays nothing on a Xabitha win, while a closed one pays 200.
- Jokers cost a full 25 in hand, so use them in melds rather than holding them late in the round.
